Roman Empire

For ages, the huge and powerful Roman Empire ruled over the Mediterranean region and beyond. Its culture combined elements from conquered cultures with Greek and Roman traditions. “A people known for their military, political, and social institutions, the ancient Romans conquered vast amounts of land in Europe and northern Africa, built roads and aqueducts, and spread Latin, their language, far and wide”(1). There were various social classes in Roman society, such as senators, emperors, freedmen, and slaves. Virtutis (bravery and manliness), pietas (duty to family, country, and gods), and gravitas (dignity) were among the virtues they held important. Art and architecture flourished with achievements such as highways, aqueducts, and enormous structures like the Pantheon and the Colosseum. Leaders such as Seneca, Cicero, and Marcus Aurelius made significant contributions to Western philosophy, literature and philosophy were also highly esteemed. “This article concerns the history of ethics in Western philosophy”(2).

Goals in Researching Roman Culture: “Gain a basic knowledge of the broad period of Roman history. Develop a basic understanding of key topics within Roman history. Develop an appreciation of the different sources modern historians can use to study the ancient Roman world”(3).The research highlights significant historical occurrences and individuals as well as the variety of sources that modern historians use to put together the history of the ancient Roman civilization. Studying the development of Roman culture provides an understanding of the principles behind social change and adaptation throughout centuries, showing how Roman culture evolved from its republican roots to its height of imperialism. Studying Roman culture goes beyond historical curiosity in demonstrating its lasting influence on other civilizations, ranging from the Renaissance to modern administration and architecture. By providing insights into common human experiences and the various paths societies may follow in their evolution, comparative studies with other historical cultures help to deepen our understanding by highlighting similarities and differences. Therefore, learning about Roman culture opens the door to understanding the foundations and inspirations that continue to exist throughout human history. Ultimately, learning more about the Roman Empire helps one to appreciate its contributions to Western civilization’s development, art, law, and governance.
